BUILDING GREEN: A GUIDE TO LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS

BUILDING GREEN: A GUIDE TO LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS

Design Trends, ENVIRONMENT, Helpful Advice, STEAMBOAT LIFE STYLE
by steamboatsir | Apr 5, 2022 When settlers first came to the Yampa Valley, they built cabins from logs harvested from trees on their own land. Today, between materials that are engineered and those that are imported from the other side of the world, the carbon footprint and ecological cost of construction materials is staggering. Purchasing materials within a 100-mile radius of your home will greatly reduce the carbon footprint of building. For John Shively, who has been building homes in the Yampa Valley for 35 years, terms like “sustainable” and “green” when applied to building can be misleading. There’s a lot more to consider in the bigger picture and how impactful some of these materials that are billed as sustainable are going to function over the long run in terms of energy…

BLOWING THINGS UP: THE MAN BEHIND THE WINTER CARNIVAL FIREWORKS DISPLAY

SOTHEBY'S NEWS, STEAMBOAT LIFE STYLE
by steamboatsir | Feb 7, 2022 The story behind the Winter Carnival fireworks display will blow your mind—pun intended. For starters, the largest firework in the world was detonated at the Steamboat Winter Carnival in 2020. The mortar the firework was shot out of was 26-feet long and weighed 7 tons. The firework itself weighed 2,800 pounds. It was shot a half mile into the air at 300 miles per hour and the mortar was blown almost 23 feet into the air. “There were 56 pages of engineering for building just the mortar,” says Tim Borden, the mastermind behind every Winter Carnival and Fourth of July fireworks display in Steamboat for the better part of the last two decades. “I had the mortar made in Washington and brought down here on a semi-truck.…

THE ART OF THE SELF-PROCLAIMED SKI BUM: DEBUT OF MB WARNER’S ARTWORK FOR THE 109TH WINTER CARNIVAL POSTER

SOTHEBY'S NEWS, STEAMBOAT LIFE STYLE
by steamboatsir | Dec 3, 2021 After living in Steamboat for over 30 years, MB Warner’s Minnesota accent still lingers. It has of way of making everything she says sound lyrical and upbeat, even when she’s being blunt. The self-proclaimed ski bum first came west in the 70s, doing stints in Aspen, Sun Valley, and Steamboat before returning home to finish college, but she couldn’t stay away from Steamboat for long. “I had a Bachelor of Arts degree and oh boy, there I was, still cleaning toilets. I’ve done every job in Steamboat you can think of,” she says. Warner may call herself a ski bum, but she is a professional artist in every sense of the word, and the latest local talent selected to create the 109th Steamboat Winter Carnival poster. It’s true,…

by steamboatsir | Sep 13, 2021 If the Yampa Valley is defined by the unparalleled beauty of its landscape, from the Flat Tops and Sleeping Giant to the iconic slopes of Mount Werner, then downtown Steamboat is becoming known for its murals. There are 21 large-scale paintings and counting, created by 17 acclaimed local and national artists on various buildings around downtown Steamboat. This walkable public art display was made possible by Steamboat Creates, a local non-profit whose commitment to public art has earned Steamboat Springs the esteemed designation as a Colorado Creative District by the State of Colorado. “Steamboat Creates wanted to expand our mission by bringing art from inside of the buildings to the outside of the buildings so everyone can experience art,” says Kim Keith, Executive Director, Steamboat Creates. “We…

by steamboatsir | Sep 20, 2021 So often we are wrapped up in our day-to-day, our hectic and busy schedules, between family, friends, and work. It’s easy to get lost in the chaos of our jobs, and often times we forget to stop and thank those around us who support us and our clients. A thank you to Stacy…

HOMEGROWN: SUPPORTING LOCAL RANCHERS WITH THE COMMUNITY AGRICULTURE ALLIANCE

ENVIRONMENT, SOTHEBY'S NEWS, STEAMBOAT LIFE STYLE
by steamboatsir | Sep 6, 2021 When the Steamboat Gravel bike race (SBT GVL) is held every summer, hundreds of cyclists are herded along the rural county roads of the Yampa Valley, much like the cattle who have occupied this land for generations. That’s one of the reasons why the Community Agriculture Alliance, a non-profit whose mission is to promote and support agriculture in the Yampa Valley, hosts ranch tours for cyclists. “They’re out riding on gravel roads past ranches, admiring the fields of hay and the cattle grazing, and we want them to know what they’re seeing, and vice versa. We provide education programs and events for riders and also let ranchers know when they can expect to have hundreds of cyclists on the roads,” says Michele Meyer, CAA Executive Director. Community…
